just learn a lot of new and exciting things; I also made new friends, went on new adventures, and had a blast while doing
it all."

Current Event (excluding IFS)
50pts weekly, due by the end of each week
Every week, you will be responsible for
finding a recent news article which relates to a business topic we are discussing in class. You should type a paragraph in
WORD summarizing your current event and include a hyperlink to the article. You may print out your paper or email it as an
attachment. The summary MUST be in your own words and include: 3 sentences summarizing the main points of the article in your
own words; 2 sentences explaining how it relates to a business we have been discussing in class; and 1 sentence giving a personal
opinion statement about the article. Please also include appropriate ClipArt or SmartArt.
Every month, you will receive a new copy
of the Wall Street Journal Classroom Edition. You should choose one of the articles and prepare a PowerPoint presentation
that includes 6 slides: 1 title, 2 summarizing the article, 1 with your personal reflections, 1 relating it to a topic we
have discussed in class, and 1 with an essay question that you could ask the class about the article. Presentations MUST be
high quality. A few students will be chosen at random each month to present to the class.
"This
year in Financial Services has been outstanding. The class is everything I thought it would be and then some. It has totally
changed my perspective on business and finance ..."
- Devin, Class of 2012
Question of the Day
5pts
daily, due by the end of class
At the beginning of class, there will be a "Question of the Day" on the screen
(also available on the class website). You should do your best to write a complete response (2 sentence minimum) to the question
and EMAIL it to me. If you aren't sure about what to write, please ask! No credit will be given for late QODs, unless you
were absent that day.
Late Work
All class work that is turned in late - without an excused absence OR without
first getting my approval - will lose 25% of the grade per day it is late. This means that if there is an assignment
due, it must be turned in (either in your desk tray by the end of class or emailed by the end of the day) to avoid penalty.
Forgetting to turn it in is not an excuse. Leaving it at home is not an excuse. Your home printer/email/computer not working
is not an excuse. Please let me know by the end of class if you were not able to finish in time - I may grant you an extension
under certain circumstances. Remember, you are preparing to be professionals in the workplace. You must take responsibility
for handing in your work on time!
"The
topics we covered like business law, insurance, credit, and the stock market had a much bigger impact on me than I thought
they would ... being educated on these things gave me a sense of financial empowerment and I felt a lot better about the future."
- Shelby, Class of 2011
STAR Sheet
5pts daily + 10pts for weekly reflections
Your class participation grade will be based on your own self-evaluation of your achievement (subject to
my approval). You must, however, turn in your STAR sheet every day for credit. At the end of each week, complete the weekly
reflections box on the STAR sheet for an additional 10pts. Extra credit is also available. You’re a star … and
this is your chance to shine!
Desk Trays
Every desk has a set of trays on it -
one for every student who sits at that desk. These are color-coded by class to make it easier (green for FS Seniors, yellow
for FS Juniors, and blue or purple for Intro to FS). Your STAR Sheet and any other work that you want to have collected goes
in your desk tray at the end of class. Any work that is being returned to you will be placed back in your tray at the beginning
of the day.
"Financial Services has changed me more than any other class I've taken since I've been at this school.
I love this class and everybody in here is fun to be around (well, almost everyone)."
